Maura Has Shown Her Commitment to Environmental Issues

Saying NO to the "Monopole"

  • When the heart of West Roxbury was threatened by construction of a massive cellular communications tower--known to locals as the Monopole--Maura led the community charge to keep the Monopole out of West Roxbury. Through her efforts, Maura helped unite and empower community residents--AND stopped plans to build the Monopole where such development would have been wholly inappropriate

Fighting to Preserve Hancock Woods
  • Maura led the charge to save West Roxburys Hancock Woods from development when that natural open space was threatened. It is now part of the MDC reservation system.

In support of Millennium Park
  • Maura was also a steadfast supporter of the creation of Millennium Park on the former West Roxbury landfill. Millennium Park now offers nature walks, playing fields, a boat ramp and spectacular vistas of the Charles River. It is now the largest public park in the City of Boston.

Fighting to Preserve Hellenic Hill
  • As chair of the Ways and Means Committee, Maura put forward the first $1 million to save beautiful Hellenic Hill from development. That money is now the core of efforts to leverage state tax credits and dollars to preserve that unspoiled hill behind Jamaica Pond. Through her efforts, Maura wants to ensure that Jamaica Plain residents will be able to enjoy the pristine beauty of Jamaica Pond and the surrounding area for generations.
