Letter: Maura: Decelle's not spot for post office
Thursday, December 11, 2003
I write to you concerning the present site of the post office located at 1970 Centre St. in West Roxbury. I would like to express my support for finding a new site for this facility.
I presently represent all the residents of the city of Boston as an At-Large Boston City Councilor. As the longest-serving elected city official and the former District councilor who represented West Roxbury, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain for 18 years, I feel very knowledgeable about the situation the community has experienced at the present site.
The present post office location in West Roxbury is ill-suited to accommodate our community. Residents attempting to access the site as pedestrians or drivers take their lives in their hands. The configuration of the road and the lack of available parking create daily hazards and many accidents and near accidents occur regularly.
It is my understanding that potential new sites are currently being explored. Any new site needs to be accessible, near public transportation and provide ample parking. I feel one of the sites currently being explored, the former Decelle's Clothing Store is not a good fit for our community.
As an elected official and as a person whose family business was located next to Decelle's for many years I know first-hand that the parking at that site is minimal and that the same issues that presently plague the existing post office would not be solved at the Decelle's location.
I look forward to working with you, our community and other elected leaders in finding an appropriate location in West Roxbury that will benefit my constitutes as well as serve the US Postal Service.
Maura A. Hennigan
Boston City Councilor
